Course topics: Every lesson consists of two – closely linked – parts. In the first part (lecture) the lecturer presents basic facts about the specific topic with relation to the educational source (part of the book, historic document, movie/video). In the second part (seminar) the lecturer puts an accent on a discussion about the relevant topic. The main goal of the course is to provide knowledge in an appropriate and interactive form. Syllabus: 1. Introduction - introduction to the course (how to adequately prepare for the lessons); - prerequisites for completion of the course; - discussion: why we should be interested in the American political history (?); 2. The American Revolution through the Eyes of Hannah Arendt - text: part of the On Revolution (Hannah Arendt); - comparison of the American/French revolution: identification of the different motives; - Declaration of Independence: historical meaning of the document; - Boston Tea Party (relation to the contemporary political movement); - Thomas Paine: personality and work (Common Sense); 3. (Anti)federalist - text: selected parts of The Federalist Papers and The Antifederalist Papers; - focus on personalities – A. Hamilton, J. Madison and J. Jay; - meaning and purpose of the Federalist Papers; - reaction of Antifederalists: why they confronted the Federalist?; 4. Abraham Lincoln and the question of the slavery - movie: Lincoln (2012); - discussion about the Constitution of the United States; amending process; - differences in the interpretation approaches; - most important amendments; 5. Alexis de Tocqueville – French observer of the American society - text: the selected parts of Democracy in America (A. Tocqueville); - focus on the main Tocqueville´s observations and remarks; - American society and its religiosity; - discussion: Which of the Tocqueville´s observations are still valid? 6. Policy of isolationism and its overcoming - text: Hiroshima (John Hersey); - purpose of the isolationism policy; - personality of W. Wilson and the idea of the United Nations; - discussion: What do you think about the using of the nuclear bombs in 1945? Was it morally excusable? 7. Rosa Parks and the value of equality - text: the selected parts of They can´t kill us all (W. Lowery); - the personality of Rosa Parks and her act of the civil disobedience; - forms and acts of the racial discrimination in the American society; - Black Lives Matter movement; 8. Kent State University incident - document: Vietnam War (Netflix); - The student´s antiwar movement in the 1960s – reasons of the protest; - war in Vietnam – why is this war a milestone in the American history and how it is still influencing contemporary society (…)?; 9. Bob Woodward v. President of the United State (Watergate scandal) - text: the selected parts of All presidential men (B. Woodward and C. Bernstein); - President of the United States – powers and weaknesses; - impeachment; - United States presidential election; 10. Democrats v. Republicans - video: the record of House of Representatives sit-in (youtube); - Congress of the United States – function and powers; - election and mandates; - what are the significant ideological differences between Democrats and Republicans?; 11. The Brett Kavanaugh´s case - video: the record of Brett Kavanaugh´s public hearing (youtube); - Supreme court of the USA – powers and judges; - Supreme court judge – nomination and confirmation process; - discussion: How does political background of the judges effect court´s decisions?; 12. Don´t tread on me! - video: the record of the demonstrators´ attack on the Capitol (youtube); - phenomenon of Donald Trump (rise of populism); - conspiracy theories and their effect on the public discourse (QAnon, Deep State, Pizza Gate,…); - discussion: Is the present American society divided?
