American Political History (XNUPb007)

Course topics: The course American Political History is an elective subject aimed at stimulating interest in and deepening a contextual understanding of the political history of the United States. Each topic will also be presented to students through primary sources closely related to the issue under discussion (e.g., excerpts from works, historical documents, recordings/film footage). Brief course outline: 1. Introduction. 2. The American Revolution. 3. (Anti-)Federalists. 4. Abraham Lincoln and the issue of slavery. 5. Alexis de Tocqueville – a French observer of American society. 6. The policy of isolationism and its overcoming. 7. Rosa Parks and the value of equality. 8. The Vietnam War. 9. The Watergate Affair. 10. Democrats vs. Republicans. 11. The Supreme Court of the United States. 12. America in the grip of conspiracy theories.
